The creature took in the scene within a minute and spoke, “Fredrick. Leave. Now. You will not have these two. You have lost this night.”
Fredrick scowled and let out a horrible howl, lunging for the creature only to meet the opposing wall face first. Eve rushed to her companion’s side, “What does he mean, Fredrick? What is he?”
Fredrick spat, “That, dear Eve, is an angel and what he means is that we’ve lost the right to Michael and Sarah’s souls, at least for the moment. I warned you that showing yourself early could mean a loss. But would you listen? No! Now let’s get out of here. I can’t bear the sight of this angel for another moment.”
With that Fredrick disappeared. Eve shot one last longing look at Michael, gave Sarah another glare then she, too, disappeared.
Sarah blinked at the empty spot where Eve had once stood then turned to the angel, “Thank you.”
It wasn’t much but there wasn’t anything else to say.
The angel smiled, “But of course, Sarah. It’s part of my job as your Guardian Angel. I’d be falling down on the job if I allowed you to get yourself killed tonight. Now, you and Michael should leave before Fredrick decides to forget the rules. His kind is like that, you know.”
Sarah grimaced, “I figured.”
She turned to Michael and held out her hand, “Shall we?”
Michael nodded, gave Sarah a smile and took her hand.
Pulling her into his arms he said, “I choose you, Sarah. You’re right, Eve is gone and it’s time to move on. Start healing. And you’ve been there for me through all of this.”
Sarah’s eyes watered as she realized that she’d finally won. She gazed up at Michael as he lowered his head and captured her mouth with his.
