"Changeling's Revenge":
The older shifter gave her a nod of acknowledgement before
walking a little ways away from her, his arm still around the younger shifter's
shoulders causing Basil to move with him, “Listen, bro, if you play your cards
right and make sure that fine looking piece of tail finishes her mission with
the smallest amount of trouble and Boss might just welcome you back home.”
Basil wasn’t sure what to think. Was his brother teasing
him, getting his hopes up just to watch them crash and burn when Rodion
delivered the just kidding punch line?
Basil shook his head, Nope. Not falling for it this time.
What he said out loud was, “One: Peyton’s not a piece of ass
to me, Rodion. And two: I’ll believe the ole do good and you can come home
speech when I hear it from Bossman himself.”
His brother gave him a knowing smile, “I figured you would
say that and told Bossman as much. Be expecting the call sometime tomorrow.”
Rodion patted Basil on the chest, “Don’t screw this up, bro.
I kinda miss you at home. And you know mum was heartbroken when Bossman
banished you, making you live topside. I’m sure she’d love to see you again.”
Basil looked at Rodion in shock, “What are you saying? Are
you trying to tell me that if Peyton’s mission doesn’t get completed that I’ll
never be able to return home? Is that what you’re saying?”
His brother shook his head, “I guess what I’m saying, Basil,
is don’t screw this up. Keep your head in the game otherwise, yeah, you won’t
be allowed to come home because Lucifer will make sure of that. And an eternity
is a really long time to have to co-exist with these filthy humans, no matter
how good they look.”
Basil couldn’t believe what he was hearing! Sure, he’d
screwed up when that Gypsy soul slipped past him and was returned to its body,
but how was he supposed to know that particular Gypsy clan knew the proper
spells to bring their loved ones back?
Peyton walked over to them, “Basil, we need to get going.”
He looked at Rodion, “Don’t worry, big brother. I’ll make
sure the job’s done right.”
