Sarah watched as Michael moved to stand in front of her in wonder. Was Michael really choosing life, choosing her, over an eternity with Eve? That couldn’t be right. This had to be Michael coming to the rescue of the underdog, like he always did. Sarah decided that she shouldn’t read too much into it than that.
She looked around, trying to locate Eve. When she did she saw the look of shock and pain that Eve was wearing. When Eve caught Sarah looking at her with pity the look of shock quickly melted into a look of pure hatred.
Great. I’m going to die in the middle of a smelly alley by my best friend’s hand and no one will even know what happened to me. Will Michael survive to tell our tale? Sarah wondered as she watched Eve stalk toward her.
“You! This is all your fault! You couldn’t even wait until my body was cold before you attempted to take my place in Michael’s bed, could you? I thought you were my best friend!” Eve shouted as she marched over to Sarah.
She couldn’t believe that Sarah could do this to her. They’d known each other since Kindergarten. They’d met when Eve had pushed a particularly nasty little boy to the ground for bullying Sarah and the two had become fast friends. They shared everything over the years with the agreement that they’d never share boyfriends.
Michael should have been no exception. It didn’t matter that Sarah had met him first and told Eve that she had a crush on him in high school. It didn’t even matter that Eve had been ‘dead’ for a year, Eve still felt betrayed and for some reason it hurt her more to think it was by her best friend.
Sarah held her hands up pleadingly, “Please, Eve. You have to listen to me. It’s not like that with Michael and I. There’s nothing going on between the two of us. We’ve only been sharing our grief over losing you. That’s all this is.”
But Eve wasn’t listening. In her mind’s eye she was seeing scenes of Michael kissing Sarah and the two of them being as close as two human beings can physically get. She saw them laughing at her and calling her naïve. Her eyes narrowed and she launched herself at her best friend.
